In its first iteration, Space Between was an initiative at Massey University's College of Creative Arts. It looked to address the wastefulness of the current textile/clothing system using design thinking. We worked collaboratively with private and not-for profit partners to develop a new kind of sustainable fashion system, one that could create value for people, planet and profit.
This is not fashion as usualFashion is the most immediate and intimate form of self-expression. Yet the current system has driven a wedge between designers and users as they are trapped on a treadmill of continuous product replenishment and accelerated changing fashion cycles. We want to create more meaningful engagement with fashion that slows down this downward cycle and raises the value of fashion in our everyday lives.
Fashion LabDuring Space Between's time at Massey University, New Zealand, the focus was to operate as a collective that supported and encouraged the next wave of designers to take action and respond to the social, environmental issues in society. We provided an opportunity for students to integrate real world experience into their learning as we fostered a community of collaboration and innovation as they developed their entrepreneurial abilities.
About UsAdvocating for fashion democracy for our interconnected times, we sought to provide thoughtful new ways to design, make and use locally-produced fashion. We prototyped adopting new green business thinking to develop alternative connections between design, manufacturing systems and consumption habits. We worked to create sustainable balance by examining the product-service system, looking at ways to create stronger links between user and maker.
